About Lucy

I am a writer, researcher, and teacher, specialising in dance and performance studies.

I was awarded my PhD by the University of Glasgow, and went on to teach at Glasgow School of Art. I joined the University of Edinburgh in 2015, where I am Chancellor’s Fellow in History of Art.

I am the author of Pina Bausch’s Dance Theatre (Edinburgh University Press, 2018), Performance, Masculinity, and Self-Injury (Routledge, forthcoming 2024), and co-editor of the essay collection Performance in a Pandemic (with Laura Bissell – Routledge, 2021). My new book, What Moves Them: A Global History of Modern Dance will be published by Allen Lane in 2025, and is based on research supported by a Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship.

I was named an AHRC/BBC New Generation Thinker in 2020, and I contribute to various programmes on BBC Radio 3. I am available for consultation work upon request. You can read more about my research and teaching here.

I teach group and private classes in Floor Barre and Pilates. If you’d like to join, you can find out more here.
